- Arrive at church at least 15 minutes prior to Mass; pick up the lectionary from the lectern.
- Hold the lectionary at or above eye-level as you process down the aisle behind servers and in front of Father.
| |
- Once you reach the front of the church, turn and face the tabernacle and bow your head slightly as the altar servers genuflect.
- While the congregation is sitting down, wait for the servers to place the candles on either side of the lectern before proceeding to the front of the lectern to place the lectionary in its place on the stand.
- After placing the lectionary on the lectern, proceed to your place by going around the lectern on the altar side (not the side nearest the wall).
- Before reading, make sure that the microphone is adjusted properly (usually just below and to the left of the mouth)
- When reading, your head should not tilt down with your nose in the book. It should be at a level that allows you to look up at the congregation, hardly moving your head to gain eye contact.
- Avoid unnatural pauses, pause at commas and periods.
- Avoid emphasizing unimportant words or phrases, the context of the reading dictates what words should or should not be emphasized.
- Moderate your voice to avoid a singsong or unnatural tone.
- Each reading starts with, "A reading from the Book of …" It ends with, "The Word of the Lord." Do not elaborate, as that is distracting.
- After the second reading, you may sit in the sanctuary or with your family.
- If you choose to stay seated in the sanctuary after you read, please remember the Lectionary is no longer taken out during the recessional.
